Promoting
the interests of mountain bikers in Southern Nevada
Advocacy:
In
July, the BARTA Board of Directors held a special meeting with BLM Red
Rock Recreation Planner Sarah Sutherland and BLM Recreation Contractor
Suzanne Shelp in order to address issues regarding trails in the Red
Rock National Conservation Area.
Following
is a summary of the items discussed and plans of action:
Cottonwood
Valley and Blue Diamond area trail signage: Until now, the single-track
trails in the area have been poorly marked. This has led to a proliferation
of new, undesignated and poorly made trails. The BLM, with user input,
has come up with an official trail system and has begun placing signs
along designated trails. The trails are color-coded and are a series
of loops throughout the Cottonwood and Blue Diamond Area. Cyclists have
ridden most of the designated trails in the past. However, with signage
and trail maps, newcomers to the area can enjoy the trails that are
open to users. The signing process is a slow one if left to BLM personnel
alone, so BARTA created a schedule to help install new trail signs.
We need volunteers to help with the sign installation on the following
dates and times. This is important trail work. We cannot leave it all
up to someone else, or it will never happen. We are willing to work
and help develop a great trail system!
